Abbreviated Background:
Very little is known of Serena's personal background other than strictly objective facts. She was the only child of wealthy parents in Seattle, who both died in a boating accident when she was in her early twenties. She obtained a bachelor's degree in business from Northwestern University, and went to work for her late father's corporation. She rose quickly to executive status, and according to company records was an exemplary employee in both work and conduct, although she kept her private life very private.
In early 1994, Serena disappeared abruptly from her home after an office party. The police were unable to find any trace of her at all for three months, no witnesses to an abduction, no signs that she had planned a trip. They were finally tipped off by a informant and found her wandering aimlessly in a small town several hours from Seattle. She was battered, bruised, and disoriented, unable to either identify her assailant or give any details of her whereabouts for the past months. After a week in the hospital, she was sent home.
Once home, though, Serena was apparently unable to resume her life. Company reports show a steep decline in her job performance, often coming to work late, misfiling reports, missing deadlines. Just before it seemed inevitable that she be demoted or fired, she quit. Records show she lived from savings for two months, but nothing else is known of that time.
In August 1994, Serena entered the Sisters Of Perpetual Hope convent, an enigma to everyone there. She did not speak in more than monosyllables, and did not seem to remember any of her past at all. She remained there for the next five years, rebuilding her personality and learning everything possible from the sisters there. She seemed to take a special interest in curses and cursed objects, doing a great deal of research on them, although she herself cannot explain her interest.
In 1999, Serena was "loaned out" from the convent to assist in recovery and destruction of certain cursed objects loose in the area. A time nexus that happened to form during one of those missions ended up with her drawn forward in time by agents of the Centre. So they put her in training, and she seems to be doing all right.
Personality Traits and Character Quirks:
Serena cannot consciously recall anything of her life before her mid-twenties, so her attitudes and perceptions are colored by this. She will tend to expect the best of people, and sometimes will not recognize malicious intent. Occasionally she has fits of anxiety for no apparent reason, perhaps flashbacks to whatever happened to her to shatter her life. She is friendly and good with people, if very quiet, and generally perceptive about them. She lives very simply, cooks her own meals, and doesn't often have visitors. She enjoys drawing and often carries a sketchpad and colored pencils.
