Abreviated Background:
Eastern Europe has come out pretty well in the 21st and 22nd centuries, Budapest, Vienna, and the other great cities around the Danube have become centers of science and learning yet again, all part of the United Danubian Republics, including all of old Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and the Ukraine, together with the other nations of the Danube valley.
Indeed, they have established an excellent space program, though its emphasis on large projects versus real results has caused it to be less than profitable. This is perhaps largely emphasized by the 2165 Eros mission to Venus, which was supposed to be the first manned probe under the planet's atmosphere.
Unfortunately, it mistook a molehill for a mountain and crashlanded. All of the twenty-five man crew was killed, save Captain Ambrose Muntean, chief engineer for the mission. He spent two years living with the bodies, until a rescue mission arrived.
He wasn't quite right after that. He bounced around the Danubian military for a while, until he was appointed to the Bureau of Military Prisons. He was an excellent worker there, and sought to bring in new technologies.
Muntean is, in many ways, both guard and scientist. If he likes what he sees in Whit's End, the Danubian government will build a similiar program for its increasingly overcrowded prisons.
He is the second child of the president of Hungarians for Peace and her husband, an enviromental lawyer. They deeply resented his joining the military, despite the UDR's decades of peace, and disowned him shortly before his return from Venus. His older brother Vlad ran away from home when Ambrus was twelve.
Personality and Character Quirks:
Ambrose is something of a misanthrope, his long isolation from people left him with a difficulty in working in groups, a tendency to speak his mind above all else, and some odd personal habits. He is a fanatically perfectionist engineer, with a hobby of building and maintaining antique electronic devices.
He is personally brave, especially in performace of his work, and in a fight may need to be removed from some repair work lest the enemy take him. He is marginal at hand to hand fighting, but is deadly with a bladed weapon, either thrown or hand-to-hand.
Ambrose speaks with a slight Hungarian accent.
